This started out as a quick experiment of an idea I've been kicking around for a while. It was supposed to be a scaled down version of a 8 foot version of the same idea made from particle board. The idea was to set this up in a farmer's field and do a drive by as the pieces formed letters as the camera passed. I may still do this someday but setting up the camera in the same spot twice was difficult so I ended up using the first take. It was a bit shaky, but with a lot of key frames I was able to smooth it out some. |

Here we have Ethics blowing in the wind. It looks a lot simpler in the photo to the right than it does in the clip with those silly letters hangin from the ceiling tiles. A little canned air did the magic along with some stock cloud footage. Sony's light rays obscured the edges of the letters just enough to give the illusion that the clouds were passing through the letters. Obviously, the catus and ground were added as a layer. |

All of the live action silhouette images were filmed behind the bed sheet to the left. The final images were added to a tracks with subtractive composite mode. Brightness and Contrast were adjusted to give the right balance and then they were inverted and layered over the ground. Some masking was required to block out shadows from the wrinkled sheet. I could not get a wide enough shot with the low ceilings, that's why I'm either stooped over, bent at the knees or kneeling in all of the shots. All in all, this technique is quite forgiving as you can easily hide many mistakes in the blackness. |

Coffee grounds and a frying pan packed with snow were the tools for the sky shot in this scene. I carefully sprinkled the grounds through a stencil (seen in the first photo above) to form the letters. Then I filmed the pan coming to a boil. I played with the levels and added some edge detection to give it a different look then played the whole thing backwards at 24 times normal speed. In Vegas, this required one pre-rendering. |
